Abstract— Since irreversible demagnetization fault can
cause serious consequences in permanent magnet synchronous motors, various
fault detection methods have been proposed. However, irreversible
demagnetization fault may occur non-uniformly along the z-axis, and there is a
possibility of misdiagnosis because the existing fault diagnosis method cannot
determine the health of individual magnet layers. In this paper, a technique
for diagnosing non-uniform irreversible demagnetization faults along the z-axis
using planar search coils is presented
